Kohen Gadol (High Priest)
The Kohen Gadol is one Kohen (priest) chosen by the Sanhedrin (high court) for this special position. The Kohan Gadol’s general role is to lead and oversee the avodah (service) of his fellow kohanim (priests) and teach Torah to the nation. The Kohen Gadol’s main role in the avodah itself is as the one who performs the avodah of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). He also brings a daily korban mincha (grain offering) called the Minchat Chavitin, from his own money. However, he does not have to be the one to physically offer it- another kohen can do so for him. The Kohen HaGadol also has the privilege of doing any part of the avodah that he desires, without having to win that avodah in the Payis (lottery).
