The Ephod is one of the eight items of the Bigdei Kehuna (priestly clothing ) that the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) wears during his service. It is woven with five different strings: one string of linen, three woolen strings in the color of techelet (violet-blue), argaman (purple), and shani (scarlet), and a fifth string of gold thread.
There are different opinions regarding the shape of the ephod. According to Rashi, the ephod is like an apron that goes over the shoulders. According to the Rambam, however, the ephod is similar to a short coat.
